9/1/2010 - Sharks welcome new players, prepare for fall session
After a long summer session filled with injuries, experiments, and departures, the Ice Sharks have re-tooled and are ready for the start of the fall session on Sept. 13th. In their opening game of the session, the Sharks will face familiar opponent Puck Norris at 9:30 at Dublin.
Over the course of the last two sessions, the Sharks have lost 7 skaters and a goalie to either D-league or moves out of state. To account for the losses, the fall session brings at least five new faces to the lineup. The addition of E-League veterans Rob Siegel and Orlando Susi along with newcomers Joe Youst and Scott McGarry, will help fill holes up front, while the return of goalie Joe Payne to E-league play fills the void in net.
Fall brings E-league back to nine teams this session, thanks to the addition of one new team, The Squids. The other seemingly new team, The Warriors, is the re-tooled version of the group formerly known as The Benders.
The return to nine teams also means the return of double headers and bye weeks. This session, the Sharks will play one double header in week 7, with a bye in week 9. They'll play each team once and will face Puck Norris, Crystal Lake, The Knights, and Black Ice twice.

6/7/10 - Sharks Slide Continues in Loss to Wings
Despite the return of Jen Chasteen and Julie Page to the lineup, the Ice Sharks continued their slide Monday night in a 4-0 loss to Wings Over Columbus. It marked the Sharks' second straight 4-0 loss despite some stellar play by goalie Pete Senchyshak.
The game was also likely one of the last appearances by Kit Sage in an Ice Sharks game, as he prepares to move out of state. To commemorate the event, some donned their best "Kit wigs" during the pre-game warmups.
The Sharks will return to the ice next Monday June 14th at 10pm at Easton in a matchup against the Benders.

5/24/10 - Sharks Lose Second Straight and Leading Scorer
It was a rough night for the Ice Sharks Monday against the Crystal Lake Slashers. Fresh off the news that summer replacement Andrew Shaw was leaving state for a summer internship, the Sharks suffered another blow during Monday's game with the loss of leading scorer Erik Clark and stay-at-home defenseman Doug Cole to injury. Down two others to schedule conflicts, the losses left the Sharks pretty thin and without a consistent attack. The Slashers rolled to a 4-0 win.
Clark's injury, a freak accident resulting from a collision with one of the Slashers, could have him out for at least 6 weeks. Cole's injury, thanks to the holiday week without a game, may not result in any lost time.
The latest losses continue a disturbing trend of departures, moves, and injuries for the session.
The Sharks will attempt to rebound on Monday June 7th against the Wings Over Columbus. Game time is 10:10pm at Dublin.

5/17/10 - Sharks Drop Close Game Against Puck Norris
Rookie goaltender Pete Senchyshak put together an outstanding effort in his first-ever game in net for the Sharks but it wasn't enough to overcome the lack of scoring on the other end. Several regulars were out of the lineup for the Sharks and the disciplined play of the Puck Norris defense limited the Sharks from sustained pressure in the offensive zone.
The Sharks, despite opening the scoring early with a goal by Jason Delong, failed to find the net again, and lost to a final score of 3-1.
The Sharks hope to rebound next week as they face some familiar faces with a new name. They face Crystal Lake Slashers, formerly known as Performance Landscape, at 7:30pm Monday May 24th at the Dispatch Ice Haus.

5/10/10 - Shaw Sparks Sharks to Opening Night Win
Having returned home from college just hours before Monday’s game, summer roster addition Andrew Shaw was excited to also be returning to the CAHL. And it showed. Shaw’s first and third period goals helped propel the Ice Sharks to a 3-1 win over the Knights in the season opener Monday night.
Shaw’s effort, combined with a strong game by goaltender Jimmy Ruble and the Sharks’ defense, and a lot of time with the man-advantage helped the Sharks keep the Knights scoreless for most of the game. The Knights took five penalties to the Sharks’ one.
Shaw opened the scoring at 8:36 of the first on an uncontested breakaway. He attempted a forehand to backhand move to beat the goalie but the long layoff between competitive hockey games caused some rust in his skills and the puck rolled off his stick. Fortunately, the Knights goalie was moving laterally in anticipation of Shaw’s move and watched helplessly as the puck scooted over the line through the five-hole.
Defenseman Erik Clark gave the Sharks a two goal lead late in the second period after grabbing a loose puck in the neutral zone and skating past the defenders into a breakaway that he buried high to the glove side.
The Sharks built a 3-0 lead on Shaw’s second of the night when he was sprung on another breakaway. This time, Shaw’s forehand to backhand move worked to perfection and he beat the Knights goalie cleanly to the stick side.
The Knights first and only tally came with just less than two minutes remaining in the game and resulted from excellent pressure that kept the Sharks deep in their own end for a long and tiring shift. As the pressure increased, Ruble made several big saves but was left sprawled out and vulnerable as the puck trickled out to a waiting Knights attacker who found the back of the net.
The game marked the first time the Sharks have won their season-opening game, with previous season losses coming from Koharski’s Donuts (Fall ’09) and the Benders (Winter ’10).
Next week, the Sharks will face a consistently competitive Puck Norris team that is also coming off a 3-1 win vs. Black Ice. Over the previous two sessions the Sharks and Puck Norris have faced each other three times, with each game won by just a one goal margin (two came in OT). Puck Norris has won twice, the Sharks once. Monday’s game will be at 9:10 at the Dublin Chiller.

5/8/10 - Summer Schedule Released, CAHL Changes Some Rules
The summer schedule was released this week along with a few changes to the rules for all CAHL leagues.
The Ice Sharks open the season on May 10th at the Ice Haus against The Knights. Game time will be 9:10pm.
With Winter champs Army of Darkness moving up to D-League, E-League is left with 8 very evenly matched teams for Summer. The remaining teams are the same as Winter session, with the only change being a name change for Performance Landscape to the Crystal Lake Slashers. 8 teams in E-League this session means there will be no bye weeks or double headers so games will continue every Monday for 13 weeks, with the only off week resulting from Memorial Day on May 31st.
The Sharks will face every team twice during the season with the exception of the Lucky Pucks and Black Ice. Three games will be played at Dispatch Ice Haus, 5 at Dublin, and 2 each at Easton and North.
This session will also see some rules changes introduced for all leagues. Among the highlights are:
- OT is now a 3-minute running clock with no line changes allowed at the whistles, only changes on the fly.
- OT not settled after 3-mins will go to a shootout
- Both teams will get one point in the standings for a regulation tie; OT or shootout winner gets an additional point
- Changes to suspensions and fines for various infractions
- Running clock now optional for teams losing by 6+ goals

4/19/10 - Sharks Come Up Short Against Benders
The Ice Sharks ended their season Monday in a close playoff contest that finished with the Benders on top, 1-0. Jimmy Ruble was again spectacular in net and the defense did an excellent job of limiting the Benders' chances.
The game marked the end of a great season for the Sharks and focus now shifts to the summer session which starts on May 10th.

4/12/10 - Sharks upset Wings, face Benders in second round
The Sharks entered Monday night's first round playoff contest against Wings Over Columbus not quite sure what to expect. Having faced the Wings twice during the regular season, the Sharks had come up short both times. The first, a hard fought 1-0 loss in the final minute of overtime and the second, a 6-2 rout just two weeks ago. It didn't take long to realize that this night would be more like the first matchup between these teams with the defense limiting scoring opportunities for the Wings and goalie Jimmy Ruble making some spectacular saves when needed.
After a scoreless first period, all indications were that this could be another scoreless tie after regulation. But in just over a 2-minute span mid-way through the second, the Sharks would score two goals that would prove to be the difference in the game. The first resulted from a neutral zone turnover that left defenseman Brad Granger skating in all alone on Wings' goaltender Justin Imm. Granger fired a shot that trickled through the five-hole for his first career goal. Just 2:08 later, Pete Senchyshak - a welcomed late addition to the lineup - would carry the puck deep through the left faceoff circle before making a swift cut to the inside and taking a shot that somehow got past Imm. Nearly half the game still remained, but that goal would stand as the game winner as the Wings managed only one goal late in the second period on the power play.
Both teams continued to battle hard throughout the third, with Ruble and the Sharks' defense and the shut-down forward combos doing an excellent job of limiting Wings' scoring opportunities, especially during the final minute of play with the Wings' goalie pulled. This time, the Sharks would hold on and skate to a 2-1 final victory.
Last night's stars of the game:
- The entire Sharks defense - for a great job limiting scoring opportunities
- G - Jimmy Ruble - for making the big saves when needed
- Brad Granger - first career goal
- Pete Senchyshak - game winning goal
The Sharks were not the only lower seed to advance Monday, as the #7 seeded Puck Norris and #5 seeded Benders also won their games against the #2 Lucky Pucks and #4 Performance Landscape, respectively. The results are a great testament - perhaps with one exception - to how evenly matched E-League has become. Puck Norris will now face first place Army of Darkness, who also won Monday night 6-0 over Black Ice.
The Sharks meanwhile, will face familiar league veterains the Benders. The two teams split their regular season series, with the Benders winning the first 3-1 and the Sharks taking the second, 3-2. Next week's game will be at 9:10 at the Dublin Chiller.

4/5/10 - Sharks finish 6th, face Wings in first round
The Sharks were bystanders Monday night as five teams played make-up games from Snowmageddon week. The Sharks' first round playoff opponent would be determined by the results of the game between Performance Landscape and the Benders. Performance continued its impressive late-season play by not only beating the Benders but also getting past the Knights in the second game of their double header. With the two wins, Performance finished the season with five straight wins, and secured the 4th seed in the playoffs.
The Sharks finished the season in 6th place at 5-7 and will face the 3rd place Wings Over Columbus next Monday at 9pm at Easton. Other playoff action includes: #1 Army of Darkness vs. #8 Black Ice, #2 Lucky Pucks vs. #7 Puck Norris, and #4 Performance Landscape vs. #5 Benders.

3/29/10 - Sharls lose regular season finale
The Ice Sharks finished off the regular season with a 6-2 loss to familiar foe Wings Over Columbus. What started out as a close game tied 1-1 after the first period took a turn for the worse as the Wings scored twice in the second and three times in the third before the Sharks answered again with a meaningless goal in the final minutes. It marked only the second time all season that the Sharks gave up more than 3 goals in a game. The Sharks' goals came from Erik Clark and Eric Snow, both unassisted.
The Sharks finish the regular season 5-7 and will most likely get the 6th place seed for the playoffs. Their first round opponent will be determined by the outcome of next week's Benders vs. Performance Landscape game. A win for the Benders will give them 3rd place in the standings and a date with the Sharks in the first round. If Performance wins, the Wings Over Columbus will secure 3rd place and will be the Sharks' first round opponent instead.

3/22/10 - Sharks lose to surging Performance Landscape
The Ice Sharks' hopes of finishing the season above .500 were dashed Monday night, thanks in part to a stellar performance by the Performance goalie. Fresh off their previous win against league leading Army of Darkness, Performance jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. They would eventually go on to make it 3-0 before the Sharks finally registered their first goal early in the third period off a wide angle shot by Jason Delong. The Sharks continued to pressure throughout the third but couldn't beat the goalie and lost 3-1.
The Sharks dropped to 5-6 and will finish off the regular season next week against Wings Over Columbus. It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season, the first a scoreless tie until the final minute of overtime when the Wings pulled out the win. The game will be at 8pm at Chiller Dublin.

3/15/10 - Sharks win another close one - by Erik Clark
The Ice Sharks hung on for a 3-2 win against an improving Knights squad on Monday at the Dublin Chiller. The game was not decided until the final horn ended a flurry of shots by the Knights in the last minute, none of which could beat goaltender Jimmy Ruble.
The Sharks got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first three minutes of the game. Jonathan Rosen scored less than two minutes in, assisted by Art Jensen and Eric Snow. Sean Page scored just 41 seconds later, assisted by Snow and Brad Granger.
The Knights did not give up and adjusted well. They kept their wingers, uh, exceptionally high on defense to allow them to quickly break out and get some scoring opportunities. Their tenacity paid off when they tallied their first goal at 3:28 of the second period.
Erik Clark scored an unassisted goal on a partial breakaway early in the third period to restore a two-goal lead. Maybe other teams would have been deflated, but the Knights kept coming.
With just over four minutes to go in the game, dependable defensman Doug Cole was shelved with the dreaded equipment malfunction. Clark took Cole’s place on defense, and, approximately 4.7 seconds later, the Knights scored their second. It's not that Clark is a hopeless sieve who plays defense like Betty White, it's just that . . . well . . . .
But Ruble made great saves down the stretch, and the Sharks held on to get back to .500 for the season.
Next week the Sharks face Performance Landscape for the second time in the season. The Sharks won the first contest, but Performance is coming off an impressive win over previously undefeated Army of Darkness. It should be another close contest in the E league.

3/1/10 - Sharks fall to Lucky Pucks
In their first ever game at Chiller Ice Works, the Sharks lost a close one, 3-2.
The Sharks opened the scoring at 7:55 of the first with an unassisted goal by Erik Clark. But over the next period and a half, the Lucky Pucks scored three unanswered goals and took a 3-1 lead into the third period.
The Sharks made a game out of it with another goal from "clutch" Clark, this time on the power play with only 1:09 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, pulling the goalie and stacking the lines wasn't enough to bring the tying goal and the Sharks lost by one. At 4-5, the Sharks now have four losses by just one goal.
The Sharks have a bye on March 8th and will return to the ice on March 15th at 9:10 in Dublin against the Knights.

2/22/10 - Sharks Split Double Header
Showing a little bit of rust from a week without a game, the Ice Sharks lost a close battle against Puck Norris but rebounded in the second game of the double header to beat the Benders Monday night.
The Sharks were down late in the first period against Puck Norris when Eric Snow, returning from a three week hiatus, recorded his first career goal off a shot from the point and tied the game at one each. The game would remain tied for most of the second period, but late second and early third period goals by Puck Norris put the Sharks down 3-1.
The Sharks fought hard to come back, with goals from Sean Page and Pete Senchyshak, both off feeds from Jason Delong. Senchyshak’s tying goal, scored with just 43 seconds remaining in regulation appeared to be one that would send the game to OT. But a last second scramble in front of Sharks’ goalie Jimmy Ruble ended with the puck in the net with just 0.5 seconds remaining and sent a dejected group to the locker room with a 4-3 loss.
Perhaps still a bit stunned from the last-second loss to Puck Norris, the Sharks found themselves trailing again in the second game against the Benders. Down 2-0 till nearly half-way through the second period, the Sharks finally got on the board with a beautiful power play goal by Art Jensen. Parked in front of the net, Jensen deflected a Brian Czapla shot from the point that managed to trickle through the Benders goalie. The Jensen-Rosen-Senchyshak line would quickly strike again just 23 seconds later, with Jonathan Rosen scoring the game tying goal at the 6:19 mark.
The Sharks would finally take their first lead of the night at 10:12 of the third. A breakout pass from the wing sent Delong on a rush that ended with a nice cross-crease move and a five-hole shot past the Benders’ goalie.
Ruble and the defense held off the Benders with spectacular play for the remainder of the third. Big saves and blocked shots – including a last-minute, body sacrificing block of a point shot by Matt Archer – allowed the Sharks to skate to their 4th win of the season and maintain a record of .500.
Monday’s Stars
- Pete Senchyshak – 1G, 3A in two games
- Art Jenson – 1G, 2A in two games
- Jason Delong – 1G, 2A in two games
- Defensive pair Eric Snow (1G) & Brian Czapla (2A) for their first career points
The Sharks will face a tough opponent next week in the Lucky Pucks. At 4-2, the Lucky Pucks are tied for second place in the league, posting 24 goals-for and only 17 goals-against. The game will be the Sharks’ first ever at the Chiller Ice Works in Worthington. Face-off is 10:10pm on Monday March 1st.

2/15/10 - Snowmageddon Forces Forfeit
On a night when three of the five Columbus Chiller locations were closed due to the weather, the games went on at both the Dublin and Easton locations. Despite the courageous efforts of Doug Cole, Kit Sage, Britt Crum, Jonathan Rosen, and Matt Archer to brave an underrated Level 1 snow emergency to face the mighty Army of Darkness, the Ice Sharks suffered a 1-0 forfeit defeat. CAHL rules require a minimum of six skaters per team before conducting an official game. And despite the lack of a goalie for either team, AOD's 10 skaters was enough to play but the Sharks' 5 was not. This was unfortunately the only opportunity during the regular season for the league's stingiest defense to match up against the league's most high-powered offense.
The Sharks will play a double header on Monday February 22nd at the Dispatch Ice Haus, first facing off against Puck Norris at 9:40 and then again against the Benders at 10:50.

2/9/10 - Sharks Overcome Adversity, Defeat Scrappy Black Ice Squad
- by Britt Crum and Matt Archer
The energy in Dublin was at a fever pitch as the Ice Sharks looked to right the ship against a Black Ice team hungry to get their first win of the season. Despite missing several players, the Sharks were able to outlast Black Ice to earn their third victory of the year. The Sharks took the ice already missing Eric Snow (travelling for work) and the defensive pair of Brad Granger (flu symptoms) and Chris Scott (Rocky Mountain Fever). And before the night would end, they would find themselves down two more players.
The scoring opened in Black Ice’s favor with an early goal creeping through backup goalie Brian Czapala’s pads. There was however some dispute as to whether the opponents scored or Czapla kicked the puck into his own goal, Patrick Lalime style. After a call to Toronto, Black Ice had a 1-0 lead in the only matchup of the two teams in the Winter Session. Answering the opposition’s challenge, defenseman Pete Senchyshak lifted the Sharks to a 1-1 tie with a laser shot from the blue line off a low feed from fellow defensemen Britt Crum (who was woefully out of position).
As it shaped up to be a thriller, the game’s physical tone began taking a toll. The first casualty was forward Jen Chasteen, who went down hard against the boards while courageously playing the puck in the second period. Team officials report that Chasteen suffered a broken ankle in the dust cloud and will most likely be placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the session. We raise our glasses to her. Jonathan Rosen followed suit on the next shift, straining… something, but was able to tough it out for the remainder of the game.
Fighting off the loss of Chasteen and center Jason Delong (who was manning up for Chasteen), it was once again Senchyshak that took control of the game late in the second, purposefully weaving through defenders on his way to his second goal; a thrilling snake bite wrist shot and the game winner. Black Ice played their hearts out in the third, threatening up until the 2 second mark.
It was another solid performance from Czapala, who moonlighted in goal for Jimmy Ruble. The clinic featured several key glove saves and dazzling puck handling around the net. With the win, Czapala lowers his Goals Against Average to 2.0.
Other notables:
-
Kit sage nearly tallied his first career goal fielding a rebound in front of the Black Ice net. Sage was robbed by an astute defensive player, who managed to delay the magic moment for another date. Kit; great positional play.
-
Amy Cashman continued to establish herself as a puck-magnet, picking the pocket of several offensemen, and clearing the zone on several key shifts.
-
Ron Bixel and Doug Cole continued to control the defensive zone.
Looking ahead to next week, the Sharks match up against E League’s current leader and gatekeeper, Army of Darkness (AOD); a team coming off an impressive win over the Benders in Lewis Center Monday night. The matchup will be a curious one, pitting AOD’s league-leading, high-powered offense (29 GF) against E-Leagues best defense (6 GA).
Three stars:

2/1/10 - Wings Edge Out Sharks in OT
It was the Justin and Jimmy show Monday night as both the Wings’ goaltender Justin Imm and Sharks’ goalie Jimmy Ruble had outstanding nights defending the net. Scoreless after regulation, the battle to claim a shutout headed to overtime where in the end, it was the Wings who came out on top with a goal in the final minute.
In what was perhaps their most exciting and closely matched game of the season to date, the Sharks played well on both ends of the ice but could not solve goaltender Imm. Forced to face multiple breakaway attempts, Imm came up big on each, including some spectacular kick saves.
In the Sharks’ end, Ruble also played lights-out through multiple scrambles in the crease. It wasn’t until exactly one minute remaining in overtime that the Wings managed to sneak the puck behind him. On a play that originated from the corner, Ruble made the save on the initial shot but the Wings’ James Hixon was there to bury the rebound.
The two teams won’t match up again until the final game of the season on March 29th. If this week’s game was any indication, it should be a grand finale.

1/25/10 - Sharks Win Second Straight - by Erik Clark
The Ice Sharks continued their winning ways with a 3-1 win over the much-improved Performance Landscapers at Chiller North Monday. All three lines scored goals. The defense was consistently solid. And Jimmy Ruble stood on his head in goal. It was also a night of firsts and almost-firsts. Britt Crum picked up the first goal of his career. Brad Granger picked up his first point. And Amy Cashman was just plain robbed of her first-ever goal.
Sean Page started the scoring with his first of the season, assisted by Granger and Cashman. Performance came back to tie it at 1-1 by the end of the first. In the second, Crum tallied his first-ever goal with a great unassisted charge and a solid shot on the high glove side. Pete Senchyshak finished the scoring near the end of the second period, assisted by Jonathan Rosen, who tallied his third point in two games. Jimmy Ruble came up big several times in the third, including an incredible save on a breakaway followed by a pounce on the puck as it sat on the goal line.
The play of the game may have been Cashman's picture-perfect one-time poke in front of the Performance net. She could not have put a better shot on net, but the Performance goalie was up to the task and robbed her of her first-ever goal. For Amy, it's only a matter of time until one goes in.
Three stars:
1. Britt Crum made his first-ever goal a game-winner.
2. Brad Granger played solid defense all night and scored his first-ever point.
3. Pete Senchyshak was all over the ice and sealed the game with his first goal of the season.

1/18/10 - Sharks Shut Out the Knights - by Matt Archer
The Ice Sharks posted a 2-0 victory over The Knights Monday night at the Dublin Chiller. The Sharks were led on the offensive end of the ice by Jonathon Rosen who tallied both goals. The first goal came at 7:25 of the second period on an unassisted breakaway that Rosen finished beautifully over the right shoulder of the Knights’ goaltender. Encouraged by his teammates to stay on the ice for another shift, Rosen scored again just 10 seconds later thanks to a centering pass from Art Jensen and a decisive rising shot from a bad angle below the right faceoff circle. The defense, led by veteran Chris Scott, stood tall and enabled goalie Jimmy Ruble to post a shutout in his Ice Sharks debut. This included killing off two third-period penalties, the last one resulting in a six-on-four when the Knights pulled their goalie to try to knot the score. The game also featured a solid performance by team veteran and former goalie Brian Czapla in his debut playing defense. The three stars of the game:
- Jonathan Rosen – for his two goals only 10 seconds apart in the second period.
- Jimmy Ruble – for posting a shutout in his Ice Sharks debut.
- Chris Scott – for being Chris Scott
The Sharks will attempt to continue their winning ways as they take on Performance Landscape next Monday, January 25th at 10:40 p.m. at Chiller North.

1/11/10 - Sharks Open Season with Loss
Despite a well played game, the Ice Sharks opened the Winter session with a 3-1 loss Monday night to the new-look Benders. The team's lone goal came on a break-away from Erik Clark finished with a sweet backhand move that beat the Benders goalie.
Chris Scott was quoted as saying the loss came "despite the absolute stellar play of the defenseman." His use of the singular term "defenseman" and not "defensemen" displays his overwhelming ego and complete disregard for the great play of defensive counterparts Brad Granger, Doug Cole, and Eric Snow. This continues the well-publicized cancerous effect that Scott has on this team.
The Sharks face off against The Knights next Monday 1/18 at 10:40 in Dublin.
